Sight, Sound & Story – “Black Rabbit”: A Director & Editor in Conversation.

Join us for an in-depth conversation on the craft of directing and editing with “Black Rabbit”: A Director & Editor in Conversation. Featuring editor Vikash Patel and director Ben Semanoff, this event offers a behind-the-scenes look at how vision and storytelling come together in the editing room. From shaping performances to refining pacing and tone, Patel and Semanoff will explore the collaborative process that brings a film like Black Rabbit to life, sharing insights, challenges, and creative breakthroughs along the way.

Panelists:

Editor Vikash Patel

Vikash Patel is an award-winning TV and film editor with over 20 years of experience. Most recently, he worked on episodes of Netflix’s Black Rabbit starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman. He is also currently editing HBO’s Lanterns, which will be released in 2026.

He received an Emmy nomination for his work on Netflix’s drama series Ozark and won an Emmy for his work on Top Chef. His other work includes acclaimed shows, including HBO’s The Sympathizer, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Five Days at Memorial, Netflix’s Longmire, Amazon Prime Video’s Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, A&E’s Bates Motel, AMC’s Into the Badlands, Fox Network’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Outside of TV, Vikash edited the feature documentary Back Home and the feature film The Story of Luke, which received awards at festivals across the US.

He first graduated from Newcastle University and afterwards worked as an editor cutting commercials and documentaries for the BBC & ITV, and assisting film editor David Freeman (The Full Monty & Mickey Blue Eyes). He then attended the American Film Institute to hone his craft of narrative storytelling.

Vikash resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children. He was raised in the North West of England to immigrant parents from India. His parents dreamt that he would become a professional cricket player, but after a noble attempt that didn’t come to fruition, it was time to nurture his passion for the arts. 

 

Director Ben Semanoff
Ben Semanoff is a TV and film director. Most recently, his work has been featured in episode 9 of season 3 of Yellowjackets and episodes 5 and 6 of Netflix’s new limited series Black Rabbit, starring Jude Law and Jason Bateman.
Semanoff received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Direction For A Drama Series for his work on Netflix’s Emmy-winning drama Ozark. His other directing credits include season 2 of FX’s Emmy-nominated drama The Old Man, season 2 of Showtime’s critically acclaimed Yellowjackets; Tulsa King, starring Sylvester Stallone, for Paramount+; and Hulu’s Candy, featuring Jessica Biel.
He transitioned to directing after a successful career as an A-camera operator. He was nominated for the Camera Operator of the Year for three consecutive years for his work on HBO’s The Night Of and the first two seasons of Netflix’s Ozark. His other credits as an A- camera operator include films such as Creed, Collateral Beauty, and The Upside, as well as TV series like The Leftovers, The Outsider, and The Affair.
Semanoff is a graduate of Temple University. He currently lives in Doylestown, PA, with his wife Erica and two children.
