Coates, whose career spanned over six decades and included some of the most iconic films ever made, passed away on Tuesday in Woodland Hills, California. She was 92. Her death, at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital, was announced by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on Twitter.

Coates achieved legendary status in the film industry after winning the Academy Award for Best Film Editing in 1963 for her work on Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Directed by David Lean and starring Peter O’Toole, the film became an enduring masterpiece, celebrated for its breathtaking cinematography and precise, rhythmic editing. Her work on the film set a new standard for epic storytelling and remains a defining moment in cinematic history. Lawrence of Arabia went on to win six additional Oscars, including Best Picture, further cementing its place in Hollywood lore.

Over her remarkable career, Anne Coates worked with some of the most renowned directors of her generation, including Michael Powell, Sidney Lumet, and the late Milos Forman.
