Sight, Sound & Story Halloween Edition I– Cutting Horror and Dark Comedy

​

Inside Episode XLVII: Just in time for Halloween, Sight, Sound & Story brings you an evening of chilling thrills and razor-sharp storytelling with two acclaimed editors who know how to make an audience squirm, laugh, and scream.

​

Editor Brian Philip Davis will discuss shaping suspense and unsettling mood in his work on "Oddity." Editor Patrick Lawrence will share how he crafted the mix of humor and horror in "Screamboat." Together, they’ll reveal how choices in pacing, rhythm, and tone can turn raw footage into scenes that shock, scare, and entertain.

Moderated by Chad Anderson, the conversation will include scenes from both films, offering a rare chance to see how the edit shapes the final experience on screen.

Brian Philip Davis is recognized for his contributions to genre cinema, with his films showcased at prestigious festivals such as Sundance, Tribeca, TIFF, SXSW, Frightfest, and Fantastic Fest. One of his notable projects is Damian McCarthy’s "Oddity," which won the SXSW Midnighter Audience Award in 2024.

​

His recent and upcoming projects include "Worldbreaker," directed by Brad Anderson ("The Machinist") and starring Milla Jovovich and Luke Evans, as well as "The Occupant," a science fiction thriller by Hugo Keijzer featuring Ella Balinska.

​

Davis has a long-standing collaboration with director Chris Baugh, working together on several projects, including the Sundance revenge thriller "Bad Day for the Cut," the horror-comedy "Boys from County Hell," and "Wreck," which debuted on BBC and Hulu.

​

Additional titles include Stacey Gregg’s "Here Before" starring Andrea Riseborough, the found footage horror "The Devil’s Doorway," the family film "Zoo" starring Toby Jones, and Conor McMahon’s "Let the Wrong One In" starring Anthony Head.

​

He is a member of the British Film Editors, Irish Screen Editors, and BAFTA, and is represented by WPA.

Patrick Lawrence is a Los Angeles-based Editor and Director, originally from St. Louis, Missouri. He has edited over 20 Feature Films since 2014, including "Scare Me and Clara’s Ghost," both of which world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In addition to having 7 films premiere at Sundance, projects that Patrick has edited have screened worldwide at SXSW, Tribeca, Cannes, Fantastic Fest, Outfest, Beyond Fest, and more.

Outside of theatrical, Patrick is also an accomplished Episodic editor, serving as Lead Editor on the short-form Netflix series “Bonding” for two seasons, as well as the second season of “This  Close” for AMC/SundanceTV. 

​

More recently, Patrick edited the Steamboat Willie horror parody Screamboat, as well as the upcoming NEON release: "Shelby Oaks."

Chad Anderson is a college professor, animation geek, poet, video editor & skateboarder from the Jersey Shore. He has worked on various editing and visual FX projects for corporate, educational, broadcast, non-profit, and military organizations all over the country (and once in Korea). Previous clients have included E! Entertainment, "The Charlie Rose Show," the WB, The Count Basie Theatre, and a film that went straight to video, starring John Stamos. He holds a Master’s in Education from NJCU and has been teaching for over 18 years. His favorite movie is "Joe Versus the Volcano."
